Roseburg Library and ESD Office

Douglas County ESD

Douglas County, an area that more than 100,000 people call home, lost its library system in 2017 after voters rejected a tax measure that funded the 10-branch system.

But as the community lost this asset, a partnership was formed with the Douglas County Education Service District that would to reimagine how to deliver the main Roseburg branch’s services and provide patrons with access to this valuable resource.

The ESD, which had been looking for a new location as the libraries closed, acquired the Roseburg branch and hired PIVOT to find a way to co-locate the two entities.

As part of the budget-conscious renovations, PIVOT stretched dollars and honored the area’s ties to the timber industry by accentuating the building’s existing timber trusses and detailing the new children’s nook with Apple Ply hardwood tree-shaped book shelves and other timber accents.

The library also restored its function as a civic hub by offering community spaces and a comfortable lounge area with ample outlets for technology.
