Team Oregon Build (TOB) is an innovative partnership between education, industry, state, and community to introduce youth to career pathways within high-wage and high-demand construction trades. Education and Community partners from three Oregon regions dramatically impacted by wildfire and homelessness launched this career-connected learning and disaster/crisis response initiative.
Lane ESD was awarded $2.2 million in ESSER grant funding from ODE in March 2024 to help pilot TOB. Lane ESD brought the PIVOT team onto the rapidly expanding project for project management assistance, design of the structures, and logistical support
Through TOB, students across the state gain hands-on classroom experience building temporary emergency shelters, sheds, and accessories. These structures address statewide challenges such as the housing crisis and wildfire recovery. Not only are students gaining hands-on experience, certifications, and credentials, but they are providing safe and sustainable housing for people in their communities.
PIVOT provides project management services such as agency coordination, budget management, event planning, data collection and reporting, and stakeholder support for Team Oregon Build. This includes facilitating bi-weekly team meetings, coordinating with suppliers and educators, planning and implementing professional development sessions, and developing the final grant report. Additionally, the PIVOT team developed construction drawings for 8’x12’ and 8’x16’ insulated shelters as well as 8’x8’ and 8’x12’ sheds.
Team Oregon Build has had a monumental impact on students and communities. In an interview with the Register Guard, one Eugene 4J student shared, “I wouldn’t have finished high school without this, I don’t think. This saved me 100%.”
The PIVOT team works closely with Lane ESD, Lane Workforce Partnership, Southern Oregon ESD, Mid-Willamette Education Consortium, Oregon Department of Education, Oregon Housing and Community Services, Everyone Village, and many more to ensure the successful outcome of this grant. So far, through the program that began in April of 2024, there are over 400 builds in progress across more than 80 schools.
