After two unsuccessful bond attempts, the Oakland School District turned to PIVOT Architecture for support on its third effort. In May 2024, voters approved a $4.5 million bond measure which qualified the district for a matching grant.
Leading up to the successful vote, PIVOT conducted a TAP assessment and developed a long-range facilities plan to evaluate the district's buildings and create a strategy for an effective bond campaign. While previous bond measures had sought nearly $20 million for a wide range of projects, PIVOT advised the district to focus on a single multipurpose facility.
Through community outreach, the pre-bond team identified a strong desire for gathering space within the close-knit community. Residents wanted a better venue for local performances, youth sports, and other events. The partially condemned facility, originally built in the 1930s, was no longer meeting the community's needs.
Design and Construction
The new gym was designed with telescopic bleachers, six basketball hoops, locker rooms, all-gender restrooms, and a concession stand located just beyond the secure lobby. Opposite the telescopic seating, PIVOT incorporated a retractable stage with integrated audio-visual technology, allowing the facility to accommodate theatrical productions, performances, and other community events. Exterior fencing also helps improve safety across the school grounds.
The design team also helped the district secure additional grants that strengthened and improved other district facilities.
