COMMUNICATING DESIGN INTENT
When designing commercial environments, materials boards can be used to communicate the design intent of a project. The PIVOT interiors team developed two interior color concepts for TriMet’s new office buildings. Once materials had been selected we created presentation boards to show accent colors, tackable fabrics, flooring, casework and furniture. TriMet displayed the material boards in their main lobby and digitally distributed copies to their employees. These materials boards made it possible for TriMet to include every staff member in the design process.
REINFORCING IDENTITY
Fostering a unified company culture across an organization with different departments with diverse functions can be complex. To reinforce the identity of each work group at EWEB’s Roosevelt Operations Center, “portals” were developed to direct people from the main hallways into appropriate office areas. Each portal was given a unique identity by incorporating supergraphics of historic utility photos of each work group which not only provides identity but also functions as wayfinding around the large campus.
FURNITURE FOR A COHESIVE DESIGN
There is a misconception that reusing existing furniture is always more cost effective than buying new. But sometimes the best solution often mixes some new with existing. We catalogued all of TriMet’s existing furniture by measuring, photographing and tagging each piece. Through this process we were able to sort the good from the bad and determine the new furniture necessary to be purchased. We created a large inventory binder that was referenced constantly during the planning of TriMet’s renovated office buildings, which enabled them to effectively allocate funds for new pieces necessary to fit into their new space. Through our familiarity with the many commercial furniture vendors available to designers, we were able to coordinate with their existing furniture for a cohesive design.
A SIMPLE REFRESH
Sometimes a client just wants to spruce up. It may be all that their budget will allow or it may be that they like everything about their space and just want it selectively updated. PIVOT designers assisted the economic consulting firm ECONorthwest with color selection by touring their offices, interviewing staff, and to learning more about their spaces. The team preferred muted tones and we compiled three separate color schemes–all designed to elicit dialog and introduce them to the possibilities. PIVOT met with the staff at their offices to discuss color placement strategies. The selections were a hit. The entire process took place in only a week and half. Short but sweet!
